Bali Fast Boat Harbours: Sanur, Serangan, Padangbai & Benoa

Bali’s boat traffic runs through four harbours with sharply divided jobs: Sanur serves Nusa Penida and Lembongan, Padangbai owns the fast Gili and Lombok crossings, Serangan handles the premium south-coast Gili departures plus much of the charter fleet, and Benoa takes cruise ships, party boats and private yachts. Pick the wrong one and you add two hours of road; pick right and the island you want is 30–90 minutes off the bow.

Here’s each harbour as a traveller actually meets it.

Sanur Harbour — the Island Commuter Hub

The purpose-built terminal that opened in 2023 turned Bali’s busiest short crossing into a proper port: operator ticket counters, waiting areas, toilets, jetty boarding. Boats leave from ~7 am for Nusa Penida (30–50 minutes, Banjar Nyuh or Sampalan) and Nusa Lembongan (30–40 minutes, Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay). Arrive 30–60 minutes early to swap vouchers for boarding passes — the queue is the one part of the old chaos that survived the upgrade. Fifteen minutes from Sanur hotels; 45–60 from Seminyak. Padangbai — the Gili Gateway

East Bali’s working port runs the shortest Lombok Strait crossings: about 1.5 hours to Gili Trawangan or Bangsal with Eka Jaya, Ostina, Wahana, Semaya One and friends. The trade-off is the drive — 1.5–2 hours from the southern resort belt — softened by hotel-pickup inclusions from Ubud, Sanur, Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Candidasa on many tickets. The harbour itself is compact and hectic at departure waves; keep your confirmation on your phone and walk past the freelance “helpers” to your operator’s counter. Serangan — Premium Departures, Southern Convenience

On a reclaimed island 20–30 minutes from Sanur, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, Serangan hosts BlueWater Express and Gili Getaway on the ~2–2.5 hour Gili runs — the door-to-door winner for south-coast stays despite the longer sail. It’s also a major base for private day charters, which means you can trade the scheduled boat for your own hull without changing harbours. Benoa — Big Ships and Private Yachts

Benoa Harbour is Bali’s heavyweight port: the cruise terminal (upgraded to berth large ships at a 500-metre pier), the party-boat fleet, and a substantial share of the island’s yacht charters. No scheduled tourist fast boats to speak of — Benoa’s tourist product is the private boat rental and the celebration cruise. Ten to twenty minutes from Nusa Dua and Sanur, longer from Canggu with traffic.

Drive Times From Where You’re Staying

If your trip stitches several crossings together — Penida from Sanur, then Gilis from Padangbai — resist the urge to base centrally “between harbours.” Bali’s traffic makes the middle worse than either end; stay where each leg starts, and let the itinerary move you east as the boats do.

Bookmark this one rule if nothing else: islands east of Bali load from the east and south harbours, the Nusa islands load from Sanur, and anything private loads wherever suits you — that single sentence untangles most itinerary knots.
