Surfing Nusa Lembongan by Boat: Shipwrecks, Lacerations & Playgrounds

Updated: August 2026
Nusa Lembongan’s three famous breaks — Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds — all sit in the channel off Jungut Batu, and all are properly surfed from boats: anchored just off the lineup, board over the rail, paddle thirty metres, surf. From Bali it’s a 30–40 minute crossing out of Sanur, which makes Lembongan the most boat-friendly quality surf on this side of the strait — and the rare venue where a surf trip and a family boat day coexist on the same hull.
Here’s the working guide to the channel, by boat.
The Three Breaks, Plainly
| Break | What it is | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Shipwrecks | The marquee right — long, fast walls over reef at the channel’s north end | Intermediate-plus; the wave photos sell Lembongan with |
| Lacerations | Hollow, quick right over shallow reef; the name is fair warning | Confident surfers, booties advised |
| Playgrounds | The friendlier peak — softer walls, left and right options | Progressing intermediates; busiest lineup |
All three break over living reef and handle the most swell in the dry season (April–November), when SE trades groom the channel with morning offshores. Wet-season sessions happen in the windows between squalls — shorter notice, emptier lineups.
Why the Boat Beats the Beach Here
You can reach these waves by staying on Lembongan and paddling out or hiring a local shuttle skiff. The boat-based day from Bali collapses the logistics: no ferry-plus-accommodation commitment for a swell that might drop, boards racked and shaded instead of surcharged and stacked (public fast boats charge for boards and pile them with luggage — damage stories are common enough that serious travellers bag heavily), and the freedom to move between the three peaks as the tide shifts. Lembongan’s breaks each have a tidal personality; a hull that repositions in five minutes surfs all of them at their hour.
The Mixed-Crew Format
The channel’s underrated feature: the snorkel reef and the lineups are a few hundred metres apart. A full-day private boat rental anchors between them — surfers rotate through sessions while the rest of the party snorkels the mangrove edge or swims off the platform, lunch happens aboard, and nobody spent the day waiting for anybody. It’s the only surf-trip structure that survives contact with a family holiday. Groups chasing swell across the strait stretch the same idea into a multi-day Bali–Lombok–Gili charter, sleeping aboard between sessions on Lombok’s west-coast waves.
Practical Notes
- Crossing: 30–40 minutes from Sanur Harbour; morning departures get glassier lineups and calmer water both ways. Route detail in our Lembongan boat guide.
- Boards: confirm racking when you book any boat; on charters it’s standard, on public boats it’s a surcharge and a gamble.
- Reef kit: booties for Lacerations, a spare set of fins in the bag, reef-safe zinc.
- Crowd math: Playgrounds packs by mid-morning in the dry season; dawn boats from Sanur beat the island’s own breakfast crowd to the peak.
- Not surfing Bali-side first? The island’s boat-access breaks and the airport reefs are mapped on our Bali surf boat trips page.
The Bigger Arc
Season and Swell, Quickly
| Months | Conditions in the channel | Call |
|---|---|---|
| April–June | Building SE trades, clean mornings, moderate crowds | Prime |
| July–September | Biggest, most consistent swell; busiest lineups | Prime, go dawn |
| October–November | Trades soften; fun mid-size days | Good |
| December–March | Wet season windows between squalls; empty peaks | Opportunist’s season |
Etiquette travels with you: the channel lineups are shared with Lembongan locals and long-stay regulars who know every shift of the tide. A boat crew that anchors respectfully off the peak — and a visitor who waits their turn — gets waves and welcome in equal measure. The channel has room for everyone at dawn; by mid-morning, patience becomes the most valuable board in the quiver.
Bring more wax than you think warm water needs, and a soft rack strap as backup — small preparedness that separates a two-session day from a three-session one when the boat is already out there.
Lembongan is where most surfers discover that boats multiply Indonesian surf rather than just delivering it. The logic scales east: past Lombok’s deserts of swell toward the reef passes only liveaboards reach — expedition water that Komodo Luxury works with proper crews and cold storage. Until that trip books itself: there’s a right-hander off Jungut Batu with your name on it, and the boat leaves Sanur after breakfast.
