Sanur Harbour: What to Expect

Sanur's port was rebuilt into a proper terminal with a breakwater, fixed jetties and organised ticketing — a large upgrade on the old beach-wade boarding, though morning departures still cluster and the terminal gets busy between 7 and 9 am. Arrive 45 minutes before a scheduled departure, keep luggage waterproofed for the pier walk in rain, and note that "Nusa Penida" tickets land at different Penida harbours — Toyapakeh, Banjar Nyuh or Buyuk — so match your landing point to where your driver or hotel actually is. Scheduled operators on the route include Angel Billabong, Crown, El Rey and Maruti fast boats among many; frequency is dense in the morning, thin after mid-afternoon.

Why Groups Charter Instead

Door-to-boat timing — no 6 am hotel scramble; the boat waits for you, not the reverse. The west-coast sea approach — Kelingking, Broken Beach and the Banah cliffs are dramatically better from the water than from their crowded viewpoints; scheduled boats never show you this. Penida, Lembongan or Both?

The two islands share the strait but not the character. Lembongan is the softer landing: closer, calmer water, a walkable village scene, mangroves for the kids. Penida is the spectacle: the cliffs, the mantas, the scale — and the rougher roads and longer distances that come with it. On tickets, doing both in one day means two boat legs plus the inter-island hop across the Ceningan channel, which eats the middle of your day. On a private boat, the combination becomes natural: Penida's west coast by water in the morning, the crossing back via Lembongan's bays for a swim and late lunch at anchor. If you only have one day and must choose, choose by group: families and first-timers lean Lembongan, photographers and snorkellers lean Penida.
