Our Curation & Evaluation Methodology
The term “luxury” is subjective. At Bali Private Cruise Atelier, we make it objective. Every vessel, partner, and experience in our portfolio is subjected to a comprehensive, multi-point evaluation we call the “Atelier Audit.” This proprietary methodology ensures that we only recommend options that meet our uncompromising standards for safety, quality, authenticity, and service. It is the bedrock of our promise to you and the reason our recommendations are a trusted guide to the best of Indonesia.
Our audit is not a one-time check. It is an ongoing process of verification, including annual on-site inspections and continuous feedback analysis. Below is a transparent overview of our evaluation criteria.
The Atelier Audit: A 100-Point Scoring System
Each potential partner must achieve a minimum score of 90/100 to be included in our curated collection. The audit is divided into four critical domains:
1. Maritime Safety & Technical Excellence (40 Points)
This is our most heavily weighted and non-negotiable category. A failure in any key area here results in immediate disqualification, regardless of scores elsewhere.
- Vessel Certification & Compliance (15 pts): Full compliance with Indonesian Directorate General of Sea Transportation regulations and, where applicable, international standards (SOLAS, MARPOL). We physically verify all certificates of registry, safety, and seaworthiness.
- Crew Qualifications & Training (10 pts): Captain must hold a relevant Master Mariner (ANT) license. All crew must have valid Basic Safety Training (BST) certificates and be covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan insurance. We assess ongoing training protocols.
- Onboard Safety Equipment (10 pts): We conduct a full inventory of life rafts, life jackets, fire suppression systems, navigation equipment (radar, GPS, AIS), and communication systems (VHF, satellite phone). Equipment must be modern, well-maintained, and exceed minimum legal requirements.
- Maintenance & Engineering (5 pts): Review of engine room condition, maintenance logs, and spare parts inventory. A clean, organized engine room is a strong indicator of a well-run vessel.
2. Service & Hospitality Excellence (30 Points)
This domain evaluates the human element—the software that turns a beautiful vessel into an unforgettable experience.
- Crew Professionalism & Discretion (10 pts): Assessment of crew’s service attitude, attentiveness, language skills, and ability to provide discreet, intuitive service.
- Culinary Program (10 pts): Evaluation of the chef’s skill, menu customization options, quality and freshness of ingredients (with a preference for local sourcing), and hygiene standards (HACCP principles).
- Onboard Ambiance & Housekeeping (5 pts): Cleanliness of cabins and common areas, quality of linens and amenities, and overall attention to detail.
- Guest Services & Itinerary Execution (5 pts): The cruise director’s or lead guide’s ability to manage the itinerary, communicate effectively, and respond to guest requests.
3. Experience Authenticity & Quality (20 Points)
We look for partners who provide a genuine connection to Indonesia, not a generic, sterile version of luxury.
- Itinerary Design & Exclusivity (10 pts): The ability to offer unique, non-crowded anchorages and experiences. We value deep local knowledge that allows for flexibility and spontaneity.
- Guides & Experts (5 pts): Quality of onboard or local guides for activities like diving (PADI certified), trekking, and cultural tours.
- Equipment for Activities (5 pts): Condition and quality of water sports equipment (kayaks, paddleboards), snorkeling/diving gear, and tenders.
4. Sustainability & Community Impact (10 Points)
We believe true luxury travel should enrich, not exploit. We actively seek partners who share this ethos.
- Environmental Practices (5 pts): Strict policies on waste management (no ocean discharge), use of reef-safe sunscreens, elimination of single-use plastics, and sustainable sourcing.
- Community Engagement (5 pts): Employment of local crew, sourcing of provisions from local communities, and meaningful, respectful interactions with local culture.

We evaluate crew training protocols, ensuring that every member, from the captain to the cabin steward, possesses not just technical proficiency but also an innate understanding of discreet, anticipatory hospitality. We look for vessels that maintain an exceptional guest-to-staff ratio, often seeing figures as low as 1:1, allowing for an unparalleled level of personal attention
